Process

Not all neck and back pain is alike, which means not all pain treatments are alike. There are a variety of ways to become a patient at the London Spine Centre. Whether you have a back issue that needs the remedies of a physiotherapist or think you may need surgery, our clinic has the team and resources to help you get back to your best state of health possible.

Intake Streams

Neck or Back Pain

If you have a back or neck issue, call in and book with a physiotherapist with no doctor’s referral required. If our physiotherapists are concerned about your back or neck issue, it is discussed with our inter-disciplinary team of therapists, physicians and surgeons to determine the best course of action for your treatment.

B2B Disability

Recovering from an injury or returning to work with a disability can be challenging, but we work with employees, employers and insurance providers to develop practical work entry or return to work strategies that are customized to suit individual needs. It’s a detailed, consultative process during which our multidisciplinary team — consisting of physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, ergonomic consultants and more — to lay the groundwork for a successful outcome for all parties involved. We understand how to remove the barriers that prevent people from starting or returning to work.

Referred by Doctor

Referred directly to a physician or surgeon via your family doctor. Our physicians and surgeons review your file as provided by your family doctor. If they feel you are a candidate for surgery or intervention, you will be booked for an appointment. If surgery will be not helpful, they’ll refer you to a physical therapist.

Treatment Process

Step 1

Book an Appointment

You call in to inquire about a physiotherapist assessment. No doctor’s referral? No problem! You do NOT need a referral from your family doctor to book an appointment with a physiotherapist. Some insurance providers require you to be referred in order to be covered, but it is not a requirement for an average appointment.

Step 2

Assessment

We will book you into our clinic within 48 hours in most scenarios. Early intervention is key, so we don’t want to keep you waiting too long to see our rehabilitation specialists. Early intervention is a main factor, because if you leave your injury too long it could make it worse or longer-lasting than if immediately treated.

Step 3

Treatment

We are a multi-disciplinary clinic with specialists that focus on physiotherapy, occupational therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, and surgical conditions. No two injuries are alike, so the London Spine Centre focuses on providing fully customized treatment plans for each patient we see. Our focus is wholly on providing care with lasting results, by focusing on exercise and self-management strategies to deal with your pain.

Step 4

Discharge & Maintenance

In most cases, the London Spine Centre will provide customized at-home plans in addition to your in-clinic treatments. These plans could include basic exercises you can do at home, customized workout plans to do at a gym, or some reading or homework to keep track of your progress. The provided plans are more about maintaining a healthy and strong body after your initial pain and discomfort starts to subside.

Compliments to Therapy

In some rare cases, physical & occupational therapy are not effective in treating pain, in which case we will look at the following options:

Injections

Injections comprise another nonsurgical treatment option for back pain. We typically consider them as an option to treat back pain after a course of medications and/or physical therapy is completed, but before surgery is considered. Injections can be useful both for providing pain relief and as a diagnostic tool to help identify the source of the patient’s back pain.

Surgery

If your spinal issues are not responsive to non-operative management your case will be assessed to determine surgical candidacy. If you are a candidate, an appointment will be arranged with one of our surgeons.
